The handmade canvas is finally finished. I started making my own canvases because I first I’m trying to avoid single use plastic and the canvases always comes wrapped in plastic sometimes, twice if I buy them in bulk and second I love making everything from scratch. This canvas is 62″ x 35″ x 3- 1/2″, I made the frame out of of scrap wood I found in my shed.
I painted it with left over paint we had from the renovations we had done on the house when we moved in. It looks quite beautiful when i sanded it down and painted it. Now I’m not much of a wood worker and if I could make these frames out of metal I would be so happy but the idea is still on the drawing board (someday maybe), but wood fill has been my best friend and makes any mistakes disappear. Here Here to wood fill!
So before I had my new photography studio I used a polyester curtain as the back drop for my art work. As it worked OK for the time I was interested into finding out if I could use it as a canvas and to my surprise and joy I could. I guess one can use any fabric as a canvas, you just need good primer and a couple coats. So there you have it my first handmade canvas all from recycled materials, i cant wait to get started on it. I’m thinking an oil painting portrait, so stay tuned!
